I must confess to a pet peeve. It seems to me that for years now, the "historical" market has suffered from a rather steep entry curve. With the exception of the excellent products from Battlefront, no one seems committed to "putting things together" for someone either doing Historicals for the first time or trying to start a new period. We get lots of questions about "What rules do I use" and "what figures do I need to start with". Well, with a desire to fix that a bit, we have done two "Get Started" pages in our webstore. The goal is to make it easier for people to start a new period or start gaming historicals for the first time.
Now if you ask a group of historical gamers 'What rules do I use" you get LOTS of answers. We chose to push on Hail Caesar!, Black Powder, and Operation Squad. We like these rules, especially for beginners, for the following reasons:
A) They are widely available. That's important if you want to game with someone else!
B) They are easy to learn, even on your own, if you have to. Again very important.
C) They lend themselves well to one on one play. Again important if you are just getting started and need to rope in a "friend" to give it a go.
D) We have played them all and like them! Important to endorse something you KNOW rather than just sell!
Now I know some of you won't agree, but it's the best we could do and I think it's at least a start.
For old campaigners, we have done the deals without the rule books too so you have a convenient way to expand your current armies or "Get a Start" on a new period.
And of course we did terrain too!
